Linux Mint 18.1 to Ship with MATE 1.16 and New Mint-Y Theme by Default

We told you the other day that linux Mint project leader Clement Lefebvre revealed the new look of the upcoming Linux Mint 18 "Sarah" operating system , due for release this summer.

Mint-Y is the name of the new Linux Mint 18 "Sarah" theme, which appears to be based on the very popular Arc GTK theme, and it makes use of the Moka and Paper icon sets for applications and directories respectively.

The Mint-Y theme provides users with a modern flat design, but it looks like it won't be the default for the Linux Mint 18 "Sarah" operating system, which will sport the same default look like the one of Linux Mint 17.3 "Rosa," based on the Mint-X theme.

Why? Simply because the Linux Mint devs don't want to force the new look on users. They want Mint-Y to be an alternative look for Linux Mint 18, and if users' feedback proves to be positive, then they might consider enabling it by default for Linux Mint 18.1.

Yes, that's right, they are already planning on the new features of the next release of the acclaimed Ubuntu-based distribution, Linux Mint 18.1, which should ship later this year with the MATE 1.16 desktop environment, and possible a new Cinnamon version too.

There are no other details about Linux Mint 18.1 at the moment of writing this blog post, but as soon as we know more will drop another article just to keep you guys informed with the development cycle of Linux Mint. Until then, we're waiting for Linux Mint 18 Beta in early June 2016.
