Development Release: openSUSE 42.2 Alpha 1
![Development Release: openSUSE 42.2 Alpha 2]()
Ludwig Nussel has announced the release of new testing media for theopenSUSE project. The new alpha release, openSUSE 42.2 alpha 1, is the latest development snapshot in openSUSE's "Leap" series. " Before getting too excited, note that the goal for Alpha 1 was mostly to get the setup and tools ready for 42.2. So as I described in my last status update 42.2 right now is basically 42.1 + Updates. There are two exceptions though. The SLE12SP2 Beta 1 sources landed in OBS and we got Qt 5.6 and kernel 4.4 from there already. That and the KDE version update from 42.1 lead to a few build failures in 42.2 but nothing major, openQA is still green enough. I'd like to have another Alpha before the openSUSE conference and integrate even more SP2 updates. Among the more than 700 packages there are major updates of YaST, X, GNOME and systemd coming. The KDE team has also indicated that they plan to update KDE for 42.2. " The final release of openSUSE 42.2 "Leap" is planned for early November 2016. Additional details are available in the release announcement . The test media is available in Full and net-install editions. ![Development Release: openSUSE 42.2 Alpha 2]()
TheopenSUSE project has announced the launch of a new edition and new release for the openSUSE distribution. The new edition is called Leap and the initial release carries the version number 42.1. openSUSE 42.1 is a community project which also pulls in packages from SUSE Linux Enterprise (SLE), making Leap a hybrid of sorts. " Version 42.1 is the first version of openSUSE Leap that uses source from SUSE Linux Enterprise (SLE) providing a level of stability that will prove to be unmatched by other Linux distributions. Bonding community development and enterprise reliability provides more cohesion for the project and its contributor’s maintenance updates. openSUSE Leap will benefit from the enterprise maintenance effort and will have some of the same packages and updates as SLE, which is different from previous openSUSE versions that created separate maintenance streams. Community developers provide an equal level of contribution to Leap and upstream projects to the release, which bridges a gap between matured packages and newer packages found in openSUSE's other distribution, Tumbleweed. " The release features a new version of the YaST system administration tool, KDE's Plasma 5.4 and GNOME 3.16. ![Development Release: openSUSE 42.2 Alpha 2]()
Douglas DeMaio has announced the availability of the first release candidate foropenSUSE 42.1 - now complete with the latest LibreOffice 5: " The release candidate (RC1) of Leap 42.1 is out and with it come more packages as well as a new office suite. LibreOffice 5 is in the RC1 and about 400 more packages which were not in the beta made it in the RC1 release. Leap is less about the newest updates, which is the purpose of Tumbleweed and its frequent snapshots; Leap is more about relevance and purposeful updates and packages that provide the users prolonged, stable and enterprise-level functionality. Leap has newer, community packages built on the core SUSE Linux Enterprise (SLE) source code for a more stable base. Of the 7,000 plus packages in Leap, 1,500 are from SLE. Linux kernel 4.1.10, which is the newest long-term support kernel, is available in the RC1. " Read the rest of the release announcement for further details. ![Development Release: openSUSE 42.2 Alpha 2]()
Douglas DeMaio has announced the availability of the first beta build ofopenSUSE 42.1, the distribution's upcoming stable version scheduled for final release in early November: " Today openSUSE released the beta of Leap 42.1, providing an all-new look that deviates from previous versions. The newest regular release from openSUSE has changes to GRUB and Plymouth, which provide an impressive introduction to users setting up and using Leap on their hardware or virtual machines. This new imagery is specific to Leap and openSUSE's rolling release Tumbleweed will have its own new imagery in the future. This is distinctly different from Leap so users will know what system they are using if they use both distributions. Users wanting a long-term, stable Linux system can expect Leap to use the most advanced long-term supported branch of the Linux kernel, 4.1 series, which provides significant improvements to ARM hardware architecture. Douglas DeMaio has announced the availability of a test release of theopenSUSE distribution's new Leap product branch. The test release, called openSUSE Leap 42.1 Milestone 1, is in the early stages of its development and is intended for alpha testers and people curious as to what openSUSE has planned for the Leap series. Richard Brown, Chairman of the openSUSE Board, says Leap will provide a middle road between SUSE Linux Enterprise and openSUSE's rolling Tumbleweed branch. " As Tumbleweed keeps rolling with the latest features and subsystems, Leap will fill the gap between the longevity of a SLE core and the innovation related to Tumbleweed. The quality and environmental care Tumbleweed provides with its development model should quickly translate to a top-quality distribution for Linux users, sysadmins and developers. The milestone was moving forward with a 3 series Linux Kernel, but the Long-Term Support 4.1 Kernel, which enhances ext4 file-system encryption and power improvements for both ARM and x86 devices, was needed for the release of the first milestone. The new Kernel was practically flawless when added to the next build, which had some minor errors. " More information on the test release is available in the project's release announcement .
