If you’ve been working on a bevy of Raspberry Pi-centric projects but are about to travel for the holidays, you might be missing access here and there. No need to miss your Pi! Using a special VPN called Dataplicity, you can reconnect with it while on the road. All you need is a laptop, an internet connection, and a server to access.

The program allows you to connect to your Pi remotely via a web server that runs through the system, so all you really need to do is utilize an email address and use it to remote into the terminal. You’ll be creating a new user account that enables a VPN tunnel that you can access your Pi from.

Dataplicity is the brainchild of one Elliot Mackenzie, who realized just how useful it might be for anyone who’s not near their Raspberry Pi to be able to remotely connect since there wasn’t really a viable way to do so before. “People around the world are building amazing projects using the Raspberry Pi, but accessing your device remotely is still a massive pain,” he explained. So he made sure his way would be secure since it requires your own credentials, and it’s very simple to use. Although if you’re creating amazing projects on your Pi, you’re probably able to set something up like this as well.

There’s a lot you can do with Dataplicity while on the go too, like adding a web server and checking how much disk space you have left. It’s going to be absolutely integral for anyone looking to get some work done over the holidays, especially since that can be difficult if you’ve got millions of miles between you and your precious work. But hey, everyone needs a break sometimes, so make sure you’ve got some rest coming too.
