GNU Hurd Gets Better Rump PCI Driver Support, Now Runs VirtIO Driver

There's some improvements to talk about in GNU Hurd land.

With this Rump kernel PCI user-space change for converting virtual addresses to physical, VirtIO drivers are now able to run on GNU Hurd.

This mailing list post confirms that VirtIO drivers are working for Hurd with this change.

VirtIO, of course, is for I/O virtualization and has been part of the linux kernel going back to the 2.6 kernel days and is used by different hypervisors (such as KVM) for abstracting devices. Those wishing to learn more about VirtIO can visit IBM DeveloperWorks and Libvirt.org .
